TRAVEL AWARDS TO THE 2008 JOINT STATISTICAL MEETINGS

 

Are you (or do you know) a graduate student that is planning to give a talk at the 2008 Joint Statistical Meetings (JSM) in Denver? The San Francisco Bay Area Chapter of the American Statistical Association (ASA) is soliciting applications for travel awards to JSM. Here are the details:

 

Up to two Graduate Student Travel Awards, for current graduate students (receiving degrees May 2008 or later), will be issued to cover travel expenses up to $500 to the 2008 meetings.

 

Applicants must be:

 

·        Members of the ASA

 

·        Current full-time graduate students in statistics, biostatistics, epidemiology, or a related discipline graduating May 2008 or later from a San Francisco Bay Area university

 

·        Presenting a paper (oral or poster) at the 2008 Joint Statistical Meetings (must be an author of the paper).

 

To be eligible for consideration, applicants should submit the following documents by April 15, 2008.

 

A.    A one page essay describing your:

1.     Reasons for attending JSM

2.     Reasons for requesting the Travel Award

3.     Amount requested (up to $500) and allocation (e.g., airfare, hotel, registration)

4.     Contact information during the summer.

 

B.    An abstract of the paper you are presenting with information about the date and time of your presentation.

 

C.    A letter from your advisor or from the Department Chair confirming current graduate student status. The documents should be emailed to Dr. Kornak (john.kornak@ucsf.edu) by April 15, 2008:

 

Each successful applicant will be expected to present their work at the May meeting of the San Francisco Bay Area Chapter of the ASA. Each speaker will give a 30 minute oral presentation including time for questions.

 

Review Process

 

A Committee of the Chapter Presidents (Past, Current, and Elect) and Chapter Treasurer will review the applications and select the winners. Winners will be announced on the Chapter Website (www.sfasa.org) and notified by phone.

 

Acknowledgement

 

The winners will acknowledge Chapter travel support at the end of their presentations.
